Equine Myofascial Release

What is fascia?

Fascia is a three dimensional interconnected web of connective tissue with a tactile strength of 2000 lbs per square inch. Fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, organ, nerve, and blood vessel in the body. It is made up of tough collagen fibers and stretchable elastic fibers supported in a gelatinous matrix.

How is fascia injured?

Physical or emotional trauma from injury or training can cause the gelatinous ground substance of the fascia to harden as the fascia dehydrates in that area and loses its flexibility. The stiffening of fascia can cause pain and restrictions both locally and throughout the body. This strain on the fascia can lead to poor posture, improper biomechanics, decreased performance, and reduced stamina.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release is a hands on technique used to relieve fascial restrictions in the horse by applying sustained, gentle pressure to soft tissue. MFR lengthens and hydrates the hardened fascia, restoring strength and flexibility to the entire fascial system.

How does Myofascial Release benefit horses?

Most every horse has fascial restrictions and would benefit from Myofascial Release. Healthy fascia is essential for a horse to be relaxed, flexible, balanced, and coordinated in training. Equine MFR is a great addition to your horse’s wellness program and helps achieve optimal performance.
